What is a transistor?

It is a semiconductor component which is responsible for modifying the electrical output signals of a circuit in response to the input signals, in order to regulate the flow of current or voltage, thus acting as a switch or amplifier.

It revolutionized the world of electronics due to two fundamental characteristics: its small dimensions and the large amount of functionalities available, which made it possible to reduce the size of all devices on the market.

It is used in devices such as watches, lamps, radios, televisions, cell phones, and most importantly: chips and microchips (integrated circuits).

Composition of transistors

Transistors are composed, in each of its terminals, by a material or semiconductor crystals that can be N or P, so their formation is usually arranged in the form of NPN or PNP. These three parts are called:

  • Emitter: Where the electric flow enters.
  • Base: Flow modulator that connects the emitter and the collector.
  • Collector: Where the electric current flows.

How do transistors work?

Transistors function in a circuit as switches, due to their ability to let the electric flow pass, and as amplifiers, since they manage to multiply a small electric signal by converting it into a larger one.

Although they also work as oscillators, switches or rectifiers, their main task is to increase, decrease or modify the intensity of the current when it passes through their “toll”. Thus, they act in three ways:

  • In active: allows the current to pass from one side of the transistor to the other, even if it is modified.
  • On cutoff: does not allow it to pass.
  • In saturation: allows the current to pass completely.

Types of transistors available on the market

Before buying transistors in Icompplus, it is important that you take into account all their types and characteristics, in order to acquire the one that best suits your needs.

Bipolar junction transistor

It is the most used of all existing models. It consists of a base created with a semiconductor material, on which sits a crystal substrate polarized by elements with electrons, arsenic or phosphorus, which form the emitter, the base and the collector.

Field effect transistor

It consists of a bar of a semiconductor material, such as silicon, on whose poles the ohmic terminals are seated, thus working with positive voltage. It generates an electric field that allows to control the energy flow.

Phototransistors

They are those sensitive to light, so they operate through electromagnetic waves at a distance.

Point contact transistor

This is the oldest transistor on the market, so today it is not usually used to a large extent in circuits. It operates on a germanium base.
