What are passive electronic components?

The passive elements of electronics are all those that have no ability to control or modify the current by means of another electrical signal; these have only two terminals, and through them passes a single current. In addition, they do not vary, even if the conditions and electrical context in their environment change.

They do not produce amplification and collaborate with the optimal functioning of the active components, or the so-called semiconductors (integrated circuits, diodes or rectifiers, and transistors).

Differences between passive and active electronic components

Passive and active electronic components are a fundamental part of any electrical circuit, and therefore complement each other in the best possible way. Both play an important role and are intended to be together to fulfill a particular function.

On the one hand, active components are those that can control the flow of electricity, and are already integrated in most boards, which always have to have one of them. Their most common examples, as mentioned above, are integrated circuits, diodes and transistors.

Types of passive components

Condensors

The condensors, or electrical capacitors, are those passive elements in a circuit that are responsible for storing the electrical charge (amount of electricity or potential) in the form of potential difference, to release it later.

Potentiometers

This is a variable resistance, which is responsible for limiting the passage of electric current in a circuit, causing the voltage drop between both sides as in a fixed resistor, but with the difference that the value of the current and voltage may vary and is not always the same.

Varistors

A varistor or VDR (Voltage Dependent Resistor), is a passive electronic component that modifies the electrical resistance depending on the voltage applied at its ends. This, initially, behaves like an open switch, except when it is subjected to a lot of voltage and quickly lowers its resistance to a very low value (closed switch).
